Honestly, for those that either have gotten into a specialty or have applied for a specialty, how important did you find having done research during dental school (eg. summer breaks)? Did having research on your application separate you from everyone else applying or was it simply a standard of all applicants for specialties?

I'm seriously considering doing it if it will improve my opportunity. Are there any fields of research that are most looked at?
