Hey guys,

I am posting this question here because I would like your opinions bc you guys have already gone through the residency match process and some of you guys may even be on residency admission boards/committees.

I know Step 1 is really important but how important is Step 2 score in the residency application process? Can I really good Step 2 score help an applicant with an average step 1 score?

How important is clinical research and publications? Did you guys find that this was a huge bonus or something that attendings/committees really looked at or just kind of a nice little bonus but not that much of a big deal? Anyone on current or past residency admissions committees have an opinion on this?

Thanks👍

There are a few things you must consider. The highly competitive fields will rely heavily on your step 1 when comparing it to step 2. If your step I score is not so hot, of course it helps if you kill your step 2. The most important thing is to have your step 2 done before you apply. That way a program can see your score improvement. I have friends who did average on the step 1 and then turned around and killed step 2; ended up matching into competitive fields.

Research is mostly important for academic programs and highly competitive fields. Some fields/programs like to see a strong demonstrated interest in research. That demonstrated interest can range from active exposure to research during medical school to taking a year off to do research.
