Hey everyone. I'm a few weeks away from being an M1 at a lesser-known MD school, but I'll be living in close proximity to a top, research-oriented institution. Does anyone here have experience doing research at a school other than their own? I'm at least considering some of the more competitive specialties, and it seems like it might be beneficial to conduct research and make contacts with the faculty at this top school. How would this be perceived by both schools? Advised? Frowned upon? I'd love to hear some thoughts!

Know that in competitive specialties, your best chance of matching is often in your own program. Doing research in your own program helps you know the people there, but honestly you can also know them through other means like volunteering. So in the end it doesn't matter. Do whatever is more productive.
