At an interview/secondaries/primaries would it hurt to to talk about how I want to progress medicine through research. If I focus too much of my application on wanting to help patients by progressing and innovating medicine will it hurt my application.

Is it kosher to do that at a DO school or will they ding me on that.

It's fine, but I would investigate what kind of projects are available at the school and talk about one or two you'd be interested in joining.

I discussed it during my DO interviews and things went well. I said something more along the lines of, "my focus will be clinical medicine but I plan to always have a hand in research." Previous research was a big part of my app and I think it went a long way. In my experience, it was only seen as a positive.

I agree with what cliquesh said - try and point out an active area of research at the school you're interested in. I have one pub lined up first semester M1, so it's very possible at a DO school. Remember, you can always do research at neighboring MD institutions as well. I was able to line that up for this upcoming summer without much effort.

There is DO/Ph.D programs that you might want to look into!

Talk about it! They love when they can see a student put things together through means of research and connect that to clinical medicine. I think at half of my interviews we talked mostly about my research, obviously interchanging with other points of medicine, but still. It was definitely a big positive for me to be able to have a conversation with the interviewers not about me and "why I want to be a doc" but just medicine and the positives of research. Show that passion!

I think there needs to be a balance in your personal statement between research and patient care..you shouldn't make it seem like your passion for medicine is driven only by your interest in research...its good to include research and how it can shape you into a better doctor

I feel like a pre-med student who hasn't done research is like a person whose never had a drink before... I don't trust 'em 😉

Unless they are an alcoholic... then I support.

Thanks for the support.

I wan't a science major so I'd probably have to do a masters beforehand? Also was gpa is kinda low and was hoping to boost it after some DO grade replacement magic/

Speaking of doing a masters program, are you looking at a 1 or 2 year program? Further, are you planning on completing the degree before applying to med school or are you going to wait until after obtaining the degree?

no idea? How "hard" is it to get into a masters program? Is there a list of average mcat, gpa, etc for masters. my sgpa is really low(2.8) so not sure what I should do. An option is a post bacc with grade replacement. Any advice would be appreciated. So many options and I just have no idea what is best for me.

with a 2.8, all you need to do is rock a post-bacc, and bonus points will be rewarded if you can concurrently dedicate time to a EC. They're looking to see if you can handle the demands of med school.
