Hi Everyone,

1st post 😀

I'm in my first year medicine, about to hit the first lot of exams. Joy. Now, the point of this thread is to discuss how to become involved in research over the break between first and second year.

I have never done "proper" research
I am from a non-science background.
I'm keen to learn, work... yadda yadda

How may I approach this issue?

So far I have thought about asking someone who is currently a researcher, and also ask a doctor in the hospital for advice etc. I guess I just dont know about the "protocol" WRT becoming involved in research and also what skills I require: should acquire before approaching someone.

I think the idea of research is interesting, however we all know it is a must to place in a competitive field.

Thoughts, comments, advice, criticisms?

Dang, you're about to hit your first round of exams? Your school started early.. We don't even start class for over another month..

depends on what you want to do (clinical or bench), if it is clinical then you don't need any skills, if it is bench then they will tell you what they are looking for. They may have a tech or grad student who will teach you if it is bench research. In my opinion just send out professional emails to faculty that you would like to work with and start from there. Make sure you truly understand their research interests though and make sure you understand a little of what they are trying to do. this will show interest in their work and also help you understand what is to be expected from your contribution. I decided to do bench research over the summer because I have a masters and let me tell you my PI is working me to death, where as I have friends who are doing clinical research who come to the med school once a week for 1 hour. Ask and look around before you commit to anything. good luck. hope that helps.
