My postdoc emailed me today saying to add something to my CV, a conference abstract.
He listed it as: Him, me, other lab members, PI, title, conference, location, dates.

I'm confused, if he's presenting on the research (that I played a huge role in), why would I list it? It seems like it was accepted and not just an abstract.

Will it also be published?

As you can tell, I don't know much about the research world and am lucky I've done so much in such a short amount of time.

Conference abstracts are usually published in a softcover book distributed at the conference. These days they may also be available electronically through a phone app. In some cases, a regular journal will publish the conference abstracts as a supplement to their usual monthly journal.

You are listed as an author and the abstract was accepted, so you can include it on your CV and also on your med school application. For the latter, since you didn't present, it would be appropriate to give credit to the author who did. If it's eventually published as a Journal supplement, you can cite it.

The confusion is understandable. A prior discussion on the matter led to the following consensus:

"The best solution for new researchers is to list all the abstracts that have been accepted and underline the authors who gave the presentation. Now when the researcher goes further in research, only the abstracts where they gave the presentation matter to avoid inflating the CV."
