Hello - just wanted some advice,
I was accepted into an research internship program that pairs me with a mentor at one of a few designated labs, somewhat randomly based on interest. I found out I was actually paired with a mentor at my own college - would this look wierd (to not continue the research I am doing at my college during the summer only to do a summer project with someone at that same college?)

If so, should I request a switch to another institution?

Thanks

Thanks - anyone else want to chime in?

not at all. U grads jump around quite a bit, looking at different labs and areas of research. The problem arises when the U grad is jumping around because he/she can't hold out in one lab for long, which certainly isn't the case.

What if this lab is in the same general area of my current research?

Yes, a lot of premeds do jump around in the research area. However, if you are considering an MD/PhD, consistency in 1 lab over several years is way better than hopping around to different labs because you were accepted. If you stay in one lab, you will build up trust with the PI, and they may be more willing to give you more freedom and possible publications.

if you are going MD/PhD it is best to stay in one lab. The main reason for this is to see that you are committed, can handle routine work, and don't mind the same old same old. Dropping out of MSTP programs are somewhat common, and I would guess that they would love to avoid that.

sorry I forgot to mention - this is only for a summer internship - i will go back to my regular lab when the semester starts.

The only option I have is to switch to research at a different institution rather than the one I already go to?
