Just curious what counts for research experience exactly? I had a summer job collecting data for the Fish and Game, and later worked in a private marine research facility for three years where I designed and implemented an experiment but was never published. Does any of this count?

Research is scholarly pursuit. Collecting data is of course where the "rubber meets the road" but your second comment is more akin to what I would personally call research.

Actively working toward expanding your own organization's knowledge instead of public knowledge does not mean it isn't research.

You should of course be able to hold a conversation about what you were doing, why you were doing it, and what you discovered.

It sounds like this is what you did - Best of luck.
