PM&R has gotten more competitive lately. I was wondering if anyone knows of year-long research fellowships that can be done to boost chances.

As a US IMG student, how can I go about doing a case report in PM&R?

I don’t think that most programs would consider it a big plus. I’d be concerned about you becoming rusty clinically...which is much more important than research.

And from a practical perspective...you make about $200k starting as a general PM&R doc. That is money lost if you delay by a year. And if you own loans...that is additional cost in compound interest.

This is usually a last resort option, are you sure you need to consider it? If you tell us more about the rest of your application we may be able to help you decide. Research does help, I don't know why people are ignoring your question. There's also no reason that you can't do more than one thing at the same time. It is possible to do research and clinical work in the same year.

You need access to a program first, whether it's a rotation/clerkship/externship/observership etc., then you ask the dr's you work with if they have any interesting cases that they need help in writing.

I’m actually a resident in another specialty and I was asking for a relative. She’s a 4th year who didn’t match this past cycle and still wants to do PM&R. She failed step 1 and looking for a way to strengthen her application for the next cycle.

This is usually a last resort option, are you sure you need to consider it? If you tell us more about the rest of your application we may be able to help you decide. That makes more sense. I’d use the power of pen (well...keyboard actually) and contact every program under the sun about research opportunities. All it takes is one.
