How important is research for residency? Been really considering anesthesia lately.

My step is 252 and I️ have good ECs but my research experiences are very limited. So I’m confident in my ability to match, but I️’m just not too sure how I️ stand at more competitive programs. Thanks!

You're fine. Do it if you're interested. Don't worry if you're not. Those scores will get you a lot of anesthesia interviews, including at big programs. Just my opinion.

Will have tough time with big name research placed since they care a lot about research (eg Penn, Columbia, MGH.. etc) but there are lot of top tier programs that don't really care that much about research

Sweet, thanks! Which programs would be low-research friendly? Lol.

Also- I'm getting involved with a project now but it's not anesthesiology. Is that ok?

Sorry for my ignorance

Even the above named programs historically have most of their graduates go into private practice and they know it. You don’t NEED research for any of them. If your grades and letters match your boards, you’ll get interviews at most if not all the top programs. It’s not derm or ortho.

Mods, how come we don't have a "what are my chances / evaluate my application" mega thread or subforum so the main forum doesn't get littered with 400 of these per year?

I was originally looking for this. Sorry to pollute

Most programs don't care. The big ones known for research it helps with research for sure. Any research helps. Doesn't have to be anesthesiology.

Even the big programs don't care about research. However they do have special tracks for those interested in pursuing more involved research opportunities.

@toxicmegacologne

There are some people who are overwhelmingly into research over clinical care.

If the patient is volume down and instead of giving the bag two or three big squeezes and letting IV run for awhile you give 183.74 ml of NS then you probably aren't one of those people.

What research can do for you as an applicant:
1) show genuine interest into the field
2) demonstrates you're willing to play the game a bit
3) give you talking points on the interview

There are other ways to achieve the above without doing research. You have a good step score. That shows you can play the game.

Now, do you tell a convincing story why anesthesia? Is this a backup specialty? Are you going to leave the program when times get tough? Convince them.

And do you have other legitimately engaging endeavors? The ones you become more animated when you talk about them. Your speech quickens. You lean forward.
