How much does Vandy take into account research experience when considering someone for their EM residency? I know research experience is pretty important to them in other specialties but is EM any different? I'll be finishing my M1 year this May and plan on working for a month in the ER and in July work in a hospital overseas. Will doing these things rather than research hurt my chances to match at Vandy? Thanks in advance.

Even at strong programs like Vanderbilt, few faculty members will ask about research experience during interviews. It leads me to believe that it's not their top priority. Do those other plans, they sound like a good time.

Research helps at every program except the most community oriented ones.

Lack of research will not be a deal-breaker anywhere.

This process is long and complex enough that you shouldn't focus on one program to plan your med school experiences. You may end up hating it, or they may have an uber competitive year when it's your turn to apply.

Research is probably a waste of time for an EM applicant. I did WAY too much, and some PDs didn't even notice that it was all over my application.

Eh. I have done a lot of research and it was very well received on the trail.

OP - I would say that research is a plus, but it's not going to break you if you don't have it. It definitely won't make up for a red flag (e.g. a failed rotation). I would really only advocate doing research if you enjoy it, and definitely not at the expense of other parts of your education. Great grades or a high Step 1 score will get you much further than a paper.
