Research in Different Fields

Hi everyone

I posted this in the Ortho forum but hoped to get more responses here as well. I am a first year med student trying to figure out research for the summer. I am interested in optho and ortho as of now. Would research in any one of these fields be applicable if I choose to do the other? IE if I do optho research would it still help/supplement my ortho app? would it hurt it?

Having some sort of meaningful research in any field is better than nothing. If you are applying to very competitive fields like ortho, ENT, derm, etc however it also helps to have research in the field itself. For your M1 summer it doesn't really matter, if you are equally interested in both i'd pick working with a mentor in either field who is known for publishing often.
