Can residents do research (and submit papers, get IRB approval, etc.) without a faculty mentor? I have a project in mind but none of my program's faculty are interested in this area.

anyone can do any research, you dont need a title or degree behind your name or a mentor to research, the pros are they will help you jump through the hoops

Have you approached them with your proposal and have they all said "no"?

Just because someone's area of interest is different, doesn't mean they might not be interested.

The IRB and funding issues will likely vary by institution.
