Read up on the research they are conducting or have conducted in the past. You don't have to know the nitty gritty but if you aren't familiar with the research it looks like you didn't prepare. Simple search online.

You aren't supposed to wear sandals in a lab regularly! Why would you think it's okay to wear sandals to an interview? Business casual is what I recommend.
