Hello Everyone,

I am currently a senior at a public institution in California. I am planning on applying to medical school next upcoming 2019 cycle. Currently, I am part of 2 research projects that are slightly unique. One is clinical research where I mostly deal with patient files online with not too much interaction with my Pi. However, our abstract will be published by this December.

The second research is totally unique because it is paid and when I was hired the pi said that if I help her find information through reading/ summarizing various publications and organizing relevant information as summaries, she will add me as an author. I jumped at the idea because I thought it was quite opportune. For this project, the pi is looking to get a paper out my December as well.

Anyways, regarding getting a research LOR... is there a point for me to ask for one from either PI? I of course have meetings with them but it’s not any legit interaction because my work is mainly done online. Can either still write a strong letter?

Please let me know what you think. Should I join a wet lab ASAP and drop one of these?

I was in an evo-eco-immuno bio lab, and in the beginning, all I really did was sit at computers using applications to analyze and code data. I would sit in on lab meetings, follow up with the professor on something he mentioned, and conversation would continue from there. Soon, he would refer papers for me to read (you should ask your P.I if you see something you might be more interested about), and that was another opportunity to drive conversation. In addition, I was given more leadership roles in the lab through the dedication I exhibited.

I don't think you would fare better in creating a relationship with your P.I even in a wet lab. You'll have interaction when training to do procedures, and then you're on your own. Without forward interaction on your part, the relationship can't develop anyhow. Finding a lab to take you in is hard enough, so stick with this, and give it your best shot.
