For those of you who have had research positions, how did you describe these on AADSAS?

Do you describe the research that you worked on or did you describe what your responsibilities were?

At 175 characters, I can barely do either.

For my research positions, I listed the study focus and duties performed.

If I co-authored a paper in the same research position, I just listed that as another research experience and described it as the publication title.

And you were still able to get it all in there? Are we supposed to write good sentences or just be short and choppy?

Also, for dental experience in regards to simply shadowing-- what did you put for position title? Observer? lol

My descriptions were a little choppy.

Position title for shadowing: observer 😛

Here's what I put for one position:

"Exploring how genetic variation in swordtail fish correlates to reproductive success. Collected reproductive success and body size data, ran male aggression trials."

One sentence on what the research is about, one on what I did. Had to leave out a bunch of stuff but I think I put the most important stuff and they can ask me about it during the interview if they want to know more. ..if there is an interview of course. 😛

Oh yea, and I put "shadow". Does that look stupid/redundant?

It was very difficult to fit some of them. Took quite a few times to write each of them.

"Samples of bone subject to spaceflight were analyzed for the deleterious effects of zero gravity on osteoblast/clast function to better understand bone loss in astronauts."

sometimes you just have to give up things in favor of eloquence and clarity 🙁

Reviving an old thread about research!

So... if my lab wasn't paying me to work there but I was funded by an outside organization (i.e. my University) to work at the lab, does that count as volunteering or paid?

I took a molecular biology class where one of the biggest projects was a semester long research on a certain disease where we had to go use computer programs to visualize chromosomes and find what exactly went on at the locus of specific genes to cause a certain disease. MY QUESTION is this: can i include this as one of my research experiences on AADSAS?

Was this novel reseach or simply learning research lab procedures?

I had three research experiences for my app. When I put mine into the AADSAS app, I explained the focus of the specific projects without describing the specific techniques involved. I did this because 1.) they can get an idea of what kind of work you had to do based upon the description of the project's goal 2.) you can not be sure that the adcoms reading it will have any idea of the biological research techniques are or what they entail. Hope this helps!

In my Biology class we had 3 sections for that class: Lecture, Lab, and Activity. Activity part (2 hours/week in class + 6 hrs/week outside independent study) was solely for the research project that was coducted the entire semester. So it was not blended into my Laboratory portion

@tooth. novel research means you were doing something nobody else has done before (i.e. the teacher does not know the outcome). learning lab procedures is more when the teacher knows the outcome and shows you how to get there.

it has nothing to do with what the class was called

Then i guess it was lab procedures
