So I know its only Jan. 19 but I know if I don't get in a Ph.D. program this time around I would like to obtain a position as a research assistant. I've tried searching for a thread on looking for jobs as a research assistant but I can't find anything.

Can anyone point me to a previous thread or have any suggestions on where to start a search? Thanks!

Where are you located?

List servs are excellent resources, especially ABCT's.

I'm located on the west coast.

Thanks about mentioning the listserve, great idea.

And thanks for the link to the thread! 🙂

Thanks for starting this thread! I too applied to phd programs but want to look for research in new England in case it doesnt work out. Always good to have something on line. 🙂

There is the nimh database with ongoing clinical trials. I believe it is called Report. You could search that database for professors who have grants and apply to work with them.

Thanks for the resource, I'll have to look into it.

Go to each of the nearby universities or colleges by your location and look up their employment opportunities page. Most job searches allow you to search by "research."

That is how I became an RA for 4 years now and have found and applied to many others the same way. It is the BEST option. Why? Because if you get a paid full-time RA position, you get free tuition remission and can take some research or psych classes in the meantime for free! Otherwise, I'd be $100,000 in debt.

Finding a paid RA position ain't easy.... been interviewing since September and have been through about 11 interviews. 11 isn't that many interviews but I was only able to find around 30 RA positions (and some of them in really random departments) One of the interviewers even told me that he received over 100 applications and picked out 5-10 for interviewing.

But then again paid psychology RA positions are pretty rare, I've only come across 4 RA positions in Psychology in my area from 2 universities in the last 3 months.

And while I'm posting here, does anyone have any tips other than applying from the university job openings website on how to land a Psychology RA job?
