Hey guys,

Applied for IM and FM programs all over. I did research in Dept. of Orthopedics in NY for almost 2 years during my clinical years. Participated in various projects. Was promised to have my name on at least one of the published papers but they "forgot." I did get a letter signed by the residents verifying my participation so it's better than nothing.

So my question is this:

If i don't match this year, then ill re-apply next year. Since, i am done with school, i was planning to go back to doing research starting now just incase i have to re-apply. Perhaps, this will make my application better. Is there anything else that i should look into just incase this year doesn't work out? Volunteer? or just research even though i already have research experience.

Does it hurt if i do research in ortho but applying IM/FM?? Just trying to prepare just in case. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thank you!

Certainly research in any field is better than no research at all, but agree with WS that you want to be very clear about how you message it. You will want to weave through your personal statement about how you enjoy the medical side of orthopedic management or something like that, and that you are committed to a career in IM. Ortho is so competitive, and you don't want IM/FM programs to think you're a backup plan.

That said, I would think hard about going back to the same ortho group you did work for in the past. No one "forgets" someone who worked in the lab for two years. So either you are misrepresenting your involvement in the projects, or the lab leadership is engaging in shenanigans. Either way, you might want to explore other options.
