Research Proposal topic help (for application process)

Hello, I am hoping someone could help me out.
I've been stressing over writing an application proposal for admittance into Masters of psychology programmes.

I don't know what format is required, and what topic area should I do. Must I come up with a hypothesis first?

I am apprehensive in approaching a lecturer there as an advisor without knowing what to do first..

Can anyone offer some suggestions for this? I am supposed to write a short proposal for a research project thesis.. but as of now, my mind is blank.. what sort of topic should i choose? Lets say if I want to write about consciousness, how could I narrow it down to come up with a hypothesis?
