Hey Guys and Gals,

I just had a quick question about gas publications. I've looked at the impact factors of a lot of the anesthesia journals and they don't seem to be widely divergent. However, for those of you in the know, does a publication in Anesthesiology look markedly better than a publication in A & A (or some of the other anesthesia journals, for that matter)?

I'm sure this is a stupid question, and I realize that a publication isn't necessary to match in gas, but I just wanted to know from the perspective of someone who might be in the position of evaluating people for residency spots.

Thanks so much.

If you are being evaluated for residency, it doesn't. You are above the pack to have a pub in ANY journal.

it would be highly unusual for a medical student to have a publication in either journal. it would be so unusual that the question strikes me as very odd. All that said, the impact factor is probably higher for Anesthesiology. I bet there's an online resource for calculating some sort of impact factor based on number of times its articles ar cited in other papers.

Anesthesiology is 4.596 which is pretty high. The latest one I can find for A&A is about half of that, but that info is several years old. The general feeling I have heard is that Anesthesiology has more basic science stuff and A&A has more clinically useful articles. Both are pretty selective and articles have to meet pretty high standards to be accepted. I agree with the other posters that it would be unusual for a med student to have published in one of these journals. Pubs in small time journals are not that unusual.
Just my opinion.
