Would doing research in a particular specialty during undergrad and getting a publication out of it benefit for when applying to residencies? For example doing research in neurology and getting a publication during college, would that publication benefit you in the match later on?

If you want to match neurology it probably wouldn't hurt, but what you do in med school matters much more. That 1 pub won't mean much in the grand scheme of things but it is usable.

Neurology? Do you mean neurosurgery? From what I can see, match rates for neurology are only slightly above average (i.e., only moderately competitive) as opposed to the well-known competitiveness of neurosurgery. I'm can't figure out if you made a mistake, pulled neurology out of a hat, or simply know something that I don't.

Applying to more competitive places for residences in neurology such as mayo or harvard would require to go a little above and beyond which would require some publications. But in the whole it's not significant to have pubs to match into neurology from my understand.

OP posted he was going to publish a paper in neurology. I was just saying that due to it being in that field, if he was trying to match it would show his commitment to the field. I know neurology is not super competitive, I was just using that example for that reason
