Hey fellas,

I had a question I was hoping you might shed some info on. I am an MD/PhD student doing the pre-clinical thing, but I need to start looking for research rotation labs soon. My background is in chemical engineering (BS/MS), so I have been thinking primarily of doing biomedical engineering for the PhD (maybe related to cardiovascular, ortho, tissue engineering, etc). But, I also have a strong background in anesthesia (2 years as a surg tech, but I picked up on anesthesia as much as possible. Awesome field, by the way). So, I would like to start getting my feet wet. The problem is, most research done at my school/hospital is done at the pharm/molecular level, and not so much engineering. While I currently find biochem "interesting", the thought of doing it hard-core for four years makes me cringe.

Since I see anesthesia to be the ultimate human application of chemical engineering, I was wondering if you know of any of this type of research that is big/interesting/exciting etc. going on, to give me an idea of where I might start looking for labs. Is engineering even a trend in anesthesia research? Any light would be appreciated.

Thanks

Unfortunately anesthesiology right now isn't too research-oriented in general. I'm not sure where you are for med school, but for engineering applications of anesthesia, you might have to look outside of anesthesiology departments and be a little creative. Critical care medicine and resuscitation research might involve engineering.

As for tissue engineering, again I dont know where you are, but MIT has a lot of that going on. If you're not in Boston, maybe you can get in touch with people there for contacts near you. There are just too many names to name, but two that I know off the top of my head are Langer and Lauffenberger.
