Hey everyone,

I am working with two doctors in a fertility clinic on a clinical trial for a new way to do IVF (In vitro fertilization). Anyone, the trial team consists of two MDs, another international medical graduate trying to get some clinical research under their belt so they can get a US residency spot, and myself, a recent undergrad graduate applying to medical school this summer. Anyway, I have very limited research experience so this is a great opportunity for me to get some. My question is how can I ensure that I'll get recognized for this? More specifically, what I'm trying to say is that myself and the other student working on the trial did all the IRB paperwork and submissions, but our names weren't on the submission at all. Should we have put ourselves down as sub-investigators? Do we have to be on the IRB paperwork to be published in the results?

Any feedback is appreciated.

I posted this in the research forum but its like a ghost town in there.

What kind of recognition are you looking for?

Good question I suppose. I'd like to be an author on the publication when they publish the results. I guess my main concern is showing adcoms that I'm actually doing valuable research although the research won't be published during my application cycle.

Just describe it in your ECs....Adcoms dont expect a publication and wont knock you for it, well except Stanford and Duke....but why the **** would anyone wanna go there?

1. Did you do any data gathering and/or add anything of intelectual value to the research?
2. If it won't get published till after you apply, does it matter?
3. Are you going to walk up to your P.I. and demand that you be one of the authors?

1. We're going through IRB review right now. Once we start the clinical trials, i'll be an integral part of data collection/organization, and actual documentation.
2. It does only because this is the only research experience I have
3. Not directly, in my original post I was trying to insinuate how I would ensure to be put as an author on the publication. I am doing most of the work for the trial and when I joined the team, I explained to my P.I. that a publication is what I wanted at the end of the day.

I just don't know how to go about doing this other than walking up to your P.I. and saying something like "look, am I going to be an author on this?". I know very little about clinical research in general so I don't know what is required for your average person to be published.... I am sure someone around here as been published for work in a clinical trial.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying. Thanks for the input, nonetheless

Do you think that if I put this in my Work/Activities part of my AMCAS that I should include the phrase "We plan to finish all data collection by next Spring and publish our results next summer?"

You could, but it wouldn't serve the purpose of what you've accomplished thus far. You could update them with the publication/submission when it happens, but you can't predict the future. I've seen people give an estimate of when they think they should publish and it either gets delayed or never occurs. Stick to what the research is about and what you do.

Great point, thanks for your input. I'll take your advice.
