Hi all,
I am an MS1 who has the opportunity to research in a couple of labs. I'm having a hard time choosing one and was hoping someone could give me some advice.

As an undergrad I did research in HIV. I put in a lot of work and developed a pretty solid background knowledge. My first option is I can do research on HIV in a similar population here in medical school.

My other option is doing research in plastics (wounds) or gen surgery (min invasive procedures). I think I may be interested in doing a residency in surgery and figured it would be nice to do research in the field that I'm thinking about. However, I've never done anything related to these topics. Also, I'm not sure which one of those to pick.

Any advice?

Also, the one I pick would kind of tie me down. I would be committed to it for the foreseeable future.

Whichever one will let you publish the most, in the best journals, or first author. If you're thinking surgery, whichever surgical one fulfills the above.

Go with whatever one will allow you to learn the most, publish, and be enjoyable in the process. You'll know if you want to do surgery after boards and clinical years, and, if you need surgery research, work out a 4th year elective in surgical research.
