OK. Here's the deal. I've been looking around for next summer and there aren't a whole lot of research opportunities I can find. While I am going to apply to the ones that I have a chance at, I'd also like to know if my one year engineering co-op could be viewed in the same sense as research.

I know it's clearly two different things, but I'm thinking maybe when adcoms see it they may have the mind set of "oh, well he did this for a year so thats why he hasnt done any research". At least thats what I am hoping. I definitely need to get some research on my app though b/c I am seriously lacking in volunteer opportunites.

I have posted before and I'm continuously trying to find volunteer opportunites, but no such luck yet. What do you think, and don't tell me don't do things to make your app look good b/c you know we all do it so get over yourselves. 😎

If there aren't any research opportunities around your area and if you are seriously interested in pursuing research, then you might think about going somewhere else to do some type of internship or something over the summer.

As for volunteer opportunities, create your own if there aren't any good ones around your area.

klinzou, what part of TN are you in?

Right now I'm in Middle TN (close to murfreesboro) , kind of an hour from Chat or Nash either way. I'm willing to travel next summer and go anywhere.

do what I did, and kill two birds with one stone...go to a city that you haven't lived before, whether it be los angeles, san diego, san francisco, nyc, chicago, etc etc

do research and explore the city at night...

so once you localized a specific institution like UCLA..do a reserach adn find the url, from there find reserach opportunities, UCLA has like 20,0000 positions, so does the other UCs, in additoin, schools like columbia, cornell also have a lot as well..

however, participant beware, some of these places look for people with some knowledge of research...you might have to convince them that you can make up for it...

and by the way, summer reserach doesn't really get anywhere...u need at least 3 to 6 months for something productive

best of luck you radical you
