Hi I am new to this forum...and I have been doing undergraduate research and so i was wondering which dental schools are research oriented, and if these research oriented schools favor applicants with a lot of research experience in their undergrad???

NYU and UCSF are up there in terms of research funding. Harvard though is very strongly oriented toward research so much so that it makes it look like they are sacrificing clinical training to get people into that. I think research while it is nice to have the main gist of going to dental school is to take the courses since we are all predoctoral students. The research thing is a bonus and you can do that at any school. I think it will be a bigger deal if you were looking for residency programs after getting the DDS/DMD.

NYU is pretty big on research.

Pretty sure UCLA, UCSF are too.

The top five dentistry school recipients of NIH awards were:

1) UCSF ($18.3 million)
2) University of Michigan, Ann Arbor ($11.2 million)
3) University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill ($10.4 million)
4) UCLA ($10.2 million)
5) New York University ($9.1 million)

That's a good point. A lot of the schools listed before like Harvard, Penn, or others have a reputation for research that refers to their overall scholastic reputation. However, that doesn't mean that their Dentistry department is similar. So the amount of funding listed above is a more objective measure of how much dental research is being done at the campus.

One other thing to keep in mind is the productivity of the faculty. If you are interested in doing extensive research in dental school, take a look at the breadth of research being done in the departments and also how many papers the faculty have pumped out over the previous years.
