Research Stipend

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I am paid a 10000 dollar research stipend over 5 months, is that post tax? Or will that 10000 dollars be taxed then given to me.

I had a $4000 stipend for 10 weeks in the summer, they gave it to me all upfront and then got taxed on it the following tax season. I would assume you have to pay tax on it it just depends when

Depends on the program and institution. Some withhold tax, some do not. Best to just email them and ask.

So many issues on SDN could be solved this way. Humility and honesty solve 99.999% of all of life's problems.

A) SDN probably can't answer this for you because it's specific to your situation.
B) How did you get a research job that pays $10000 over the summer, and where can I sign up?
C) You should fill out your W4 form to note how much should be withheld from your salary.

I did see a program with a similar stipend a few months ago. I believe it was at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the MicroBio department working with bacteriophage.

Unfortunately, it had been filled by the time I applied, and I was told that I could volunteer and work for free if I wanted to......

What college do you go to that has a 5 month summer break, and is its transfer application on the CommonApp?

The stipend is from HMS haha, I'll just send an email, thank you!

And here I am having difficulty proving that it is financially sound to not pay me so I can continue my research. Though to be fair, I think paying undergrad researchers is kind of ridiculous since we're more of a hassle than benefit in most cases.

Advocate for what you're worth

You don't necessarily have to pay tax on a research stipend. If in doubt, ask.

You generally do have to pay taxes on a research stipend, unfortunately. Is a College students summer intern stipend taxable? - TurboTax Support

The good news is that if you make below a certain threshold, when you do your taxes, you'll find that you might not owe any taxes. But generally these stipends also are not subject to tax withholding if they're for summer internships - the institutions usually give you all the money upfront so they have less paperwork to worry about on their end.

An institution that paid me a research stipend sent me a 1099 then subsequently told me to shred it because I wasn't supposed to receive one because of the source of the funding. I asked if that meant it was tax free and they said "yes." The stipend was also a good sum. Not like what the OP has, but still a good sum. I have waited for any other tax relevant documentation just incase and have received nothing.

The grant's funds were to be used for purchasing anything relevant to my research with the remainder being mine to keep and do whatever with it. Because I had no expenses due to the lab having everything I needed, I had everything as a lump sum and was told it was mine to spend however I wanted. It was a stipend.

I still have the original 1099 because I am super paranoid. Seeing as how I have been given information that seems to contradict your link regarding student internship stipends, what should I do since I have no tax documentation? I want to make sure everything is okay between me and the IRS, but I am also not paying taxes if I do not owe any.
