Research trouble =(

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! I was hoping you could give me some advice on what to do in this situation...

I recently applied for a research volunteer position, where I emailed my application to the volunteer coordinator well before the deadline. When I didn't hear back from him after a week (he said he would send confirmation emails to everyone who applied right away), I called him and asked if he had received my application. Turns out he didn't, so I sent it to him again and he confirmed that he got it on the phone.

Later that week, I sent an update to my resume to the same email but once again, did not hear back. I wondered if the same problem had occurred (if my email went through or not), so I called again to re-check if he has been getting my emails and he got a bit annoyed with me. He said that he did get it but that he was busy with other things and did not get a chance to reply back and that my email was working fine.

Later, he mentioned that they would send out interview invites in 2-3 weeks and that I should look out for that.

It's been over a month now and I still haven't heard anything from him. I am tempted to call/email him again to ask about the status of my app and whether I am rejected or still being considered for an interview.

Is this okay to do? I'm a little scared now because I don't want to irritate the volunteer coordinator, but what else can I do? I want to know what happened to my application! Any suggestions?

LOL. Got a bit annoyed with you? You're lucky. All-out screaming matches are not that uncommon in these situations, no joke. Volunteer coordinators typically hate their jobs and act bitter towards all of the freshly-scrubbed over-eager premed volunteers. Don't let it get to you, and don't worry that he sounded annoyed. There is no need to be scared. Call and email again to confirm the status of your application.

Before you call again, brace yourself for assholery.

This is your future! Bug the **** out of him (respectfully 😉 ) and don't feel guilty. You shouldn't suffer from a poorly organized or overly busy volunteer office.

Haha I've had a similar experience. They eventually did get back to me. While I was waiting I sent out few emails to other labs just in case I didn't get into the one I wanted. I'd recommend doing the same for you.

Who cares what he thinks? Keep pestering the hell out of him until you get a response. It is his fault you're not getting the email confirmation. Also, don't forget you are volunteering your time, he is paid for his.

I would definitely call him again. Missing a good opportunity would be more terrible than being treated rudely by the guy. Good luck to you!

Pick up the phone. And expect a shakedown with the coordinator. Don't get scared
