OK.
I am applying to DO schools for fall '06 and I have a question for you current med students... In order to compete for difficult-to-obtain residencies (ie ortho, derm, etc) how does an osteopathic student get involved with significant research projects. It seems that so many schools are community-based (clinicals, etc.) that the opportunities for research would be extremely limited. Obviously, this is going to vary from school to school, but I just wanted to hear your opinion on this issue.
thx.

(BTW: schools at the top of my list: NSU, PCOM, UNT, LECOM, DMU --> any particular advice regarding research at these schools?)

If you want research theres plenty here at DMU. I do Shock Research with the Iowa Methodist Surgery Dept, a classmate is doing stuff with an Ortopod. Basic Science Research is on the rise here. All the new faculty (theres a lot of them) are required to produce research. If you want to do research the Dean of Research will find it for you either in house or somplace in the community.

While your desire to do research is strong now (pre-1st-year classes), when your class load starts, that will be a totally different story. However, research at other institutions during the summer after first year are open to osteopathic students. This summer, I have offers from John Hopkins, Mayo, and Washington University. These positions were offered to me because I have done well thus far in my 1st year course work. You should focus your class work first.

I cant speak for the schools you mentioned, but UMDNJ has a DO PhD program for competetive applicants. I have heard that there is not a lot besides boards that help you to stand out as far as residencies are concerned. Combined programs are one of those few things. It is a lot to consider and may be more time and effort than simply a summer of research (which is also available at many DO schools). Good luck

At NSU research is on the rise. Although it may be difficult to find sometimes, research both clinical and basic is happening. A student organization that helps students find research, do research, learn about research is SOAR - student osteopathic association of research. (http://www.alp-online.com/SOAR.htm). With all of the many colleges and programs at NSU HPD there are many opportunities...its just choosing and finding which one you want to do. Also, with the new research park slated to be built there should be a much greater emphasis in the next few years. If you have any specific questions about research at NSUCOM pm me.

care

Here at PCOM there are many ways to be involved in research over the summer. Our Anasthesia club is setting a summer program up with Einstein medical center in Phila., we have a human performance and biometrics lab that takes student interns all the time. Plus, if you have a real good idea, you could just hook up with one of the profs who is doing something similar. They all do research when they are not drowning us in lecture notes. But thats the thing, do research in the summer. You'll be laughed out of your derm. interview when you have poor grades no matter how much you know about research.
