Hi all, I'm an M3 planning to apply into Rad Onc. What are good options for a research year besides from HHMI and NIH? I'm looking for clinical or translational research projects and not so much basic science. Stipend is not important. Is it a bad idea to contact faculty at another institution directly and ask if I can participate in research in their Rad Onc department for 1 year?

It looks like a lot of the funding is drying up for these types of programs. There are still TL-1 funded programs that will continue through 2013-14. I think a number of these only accept PhD students, but there are several that take MD students. I know Washington University does and will continue to take MD students.

If you aren't looking to get paid, I'm sure that most departments would be happy to have you spend a year with them on a volunteer basis. Contacting a department that you're interested is not a bad idea.

I know Emory has some random scholarship for research (it's small, like $3000 for a month or 2). Other than that, if you're willing to be free labor anyone should be glad to have you, you just need to make sure you go somewhere you will be productive with that time. The faculty at my institution spoke pretty highly of a guy who interviewed last year who had spent a research year at MD Anderson and churned out a ton of work so that's a good place to start. Just contact some faculty at a place that is productive in research and you should be able to find something.
