I found out two days ago that my advisor is going to combine the bench research I've been working on for over a year with two other students to get it published. I'm pretty happy as this is what I was hoping for my entire time in lab, however, my question is- will residencies care? I would likely be the 3rd author on the paper when it comes out in the next year or so (fingers crossed but I'm really confident it will), and the topic (without going into any detail) is gene expression after UV exposure. I'm starting M1 year this August.

A publication is a publication. So yes, they will care. While 3rd author isn't as good as first author, it's still a pub. As you're just starting M1 it will be published well in time for when you apply for residency.
