I'm a less than outstanding applicant with some good tooth development research interested in a joint Phd. I don't know if this would set me apart or put me against stronger applicants. Would applying for duel degrees make it harder or easier to get into the schools that offer them?

that depends on your gpa and dat scores

I'm a double major but the GPA's at Tech are pretty low. I've got a 3.32 overall and a 3.2 science which qualifies for summa cum laude. I had a rough first two years and have done well in my second half. I'm scheduled to take the DAT on the 3rd of July and I'm aiming for a 20 (I won't take it until I get that on topscore/achiever).

I agree with above. If your GPA>3.6 and got 21+ on DAT, then you probably don't need much EC. If your GPA is around 3.3~3.4 and got around 19 on DAT, then you may need it.
