Hey everyone,

I currently a sophomore student and I am interested in getting started with doing research. I am not quite sure how to go about getting involved in it. Can someone please help me out with this on how to get involved with research. Also, is it necessary to have? Thanks alot!

You could start with your professors.

try googling your school's research. Ex: if you go to UCLA google..."UCLA undergraduate research" or "UCLA chemistry research." I actually found out that my school had an entire website dedicated to matching professors to students. If you are at a major university, you probably have one as well. Also, just go and talk with your favorite professors. If you have an A in the class and they need someone to volunteer time, then you could probably get on their research.

I wasn't sure how to start at first either, so I just went to my school's biology department website and looked for professors whose research interests also sounded like something interesting to me. I probably emailed about 10 until one emailed me back and said they had an opening in their lab, there really wasn't any magic to it. Just be polite and let them know your career goals and that you are a serious and responsible student, after all you are essentially asking them to trust you to come invade their lab space. My research prof even wanted a copy of my transcripts so decent grades help I suppose! Good luck. 🙂
