hi livebythecreek,
What is your school like? Your in depends a bit on the kind of environment that you're in, as does the type of academic research that you'll have access to. If you're at a large research institution, I'd talk to the grad students. They'll often have good ideas about which labs are working on which project, and more importantly, which would provide a meaningful experience for an undergrad. After that, start emailing professors (or try to find them in person if you can!)
If you're at a smaller school, just go talk to your professors. They'll often be more than willing to help good students find research position.
The Amgen / biotech summer internships are a good route as well, but they're a bit tougher to get into if you don't have any experience to start with. You might also consider checking out REU programs (research experience for undergradutes I believe).
