I am about to start doing research this year. I could do research at my school (union university) but they dont do anything that really interests me. They do a lot of zoology and micro that I'm really not interested in whatsoever. I have an offer to do research at a hospital dealing with prostate cancer.

My question is, does the complexity of your research matter to med schools, or is it just the fact that you did it?

Doing research is what's important (less so the type). Pick what interests you and excel in it. Your productivity is what matters.

Just one question: how did you manage to get this offer?! 😱

I actually just called and asked randomly!! it was a freak thing. called today, going to meet the dr. tomorrow and tour the lab. I have to do it to graduate, so i figure i should like what im doing, plus possibly help people. luck kinda.
"you have not, because you ask not"

Nobody cares about complexity, but rather your involvement (for the 40th time).

I don't think any research is "more complex" than other research.

If you decide on the research at the hospital, have fun filling out those IRB forms :meanie:

lets be honest, which one sounds more impressive... Counting turkey populations or finding risk factors for cancer? I do think it would matter a tad.

Also, what is an IRB form?

institutional review board form.. what you have to send in to get your research approved if you are dealing with human or animal subjects.. usually a proposal is involved as well.. and yes you are right some research is more complexed than others..

have you ever seen a da vinci used since you have been doing prostate cancer research?? that would be cool

I am glad that you have a research position now.

Have you taken general biology or general chemistry before trying to get a position?

yeah i am a 3rd year. taken gen chem all the way through analytical. only chem not taken is bio-chem. taken a ton of bio as well.

How was the prostate cancer research(to the person that said they have done it)

Strongly disagree with this comment.

You really don't think that a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial is more complex than a case report? What about a single-gene study vs. a gene array study?

I was talking about the OP comparing the complexity of zoology and microbiology research versus prostate cancer research. But yes, what you're referencing is true.
