Hi,

Say you want to be a psychiatrist, what research would you do? Would getting a PhD in psychology help in your research or neuroscience and other concrete sciences dealing with the biological view of mental illness.

MD/Ph.Ds typically do alot of research of course, but their ph.d is typically in a hard science which helps facilitate and inform medical research, such as neuroscience, mollecular neuroscience, etc. However, a ph.,d is not needed in order to be a research physician. Most research physicians dont have the ph.d. actually.

So do you mean that to do serious research in psychiatry, not just clinical trials, you would have to do research in a hard science (neuroscience) and study brain mechanisms. What about psychotherapy and Freudian/Jungian theory? No love for these two in serious psychiatric research?

no. i didnt say that at all. However, the majority (certainly not all) of psychotherapy research and theoretically oriented "think pieces" are done by psychologists these days. This is simply because psychologists generally have more training in the underlying theory and prcoesses of psychotherapy these days. This is just the nature of the trainig paradigms, medical vs non medical...so its natural that psychiatry focuses alot more on mollecular neuroscience, genetics, and pharmological issues. However, none of this means you can't do psychotherapy research as a psychiatrist....just make sure your residencey program gives you ample opportunities to develope these skills, as some programs emphasize psychotherrapy skills training alot more than others.

Learn your statistics well, and then it doesn't matter other than what grants can you write for and get.

Ifyou can get valid data that has significant interest, you will get more funding and then it takes on from there.
