in terms of research, can someone tell me what is considered average for a student that is applying. For example i did a directed study for 4 months about 20 hrs a week during the summer in molec microbio.

i had a legitimate project that included identifying protein-protein interactions that might be involved in DNA pol IV of E. Coli....

in terms of research how do i match up with other students. i can talk about my research and explain what i was doing and my results. however taht is really my only research experience. how badly am i lagging behind the bunch in terms of research?

I wouldn't say you're lagging behind. Not every accepted student does research. However, it depends upon the emphasis of the schools you're applying to. You should probably get more experience if you're applying to research-heavy schools. On the other hand, schools that emphasize primary care will like that you did research but will be more concerned with the amount of clinical exposure you've had.
