I know that the amount of research and shadowing you do before applying to dental school varies from school to school but approximately, how many hours of each would look good, regardless of the school?

For research: > 1

For shadowing: > the amount the school requires

As soon as you start doing research, you will realize that, unlike shadowing/regular clubs, the number of hours you put in doesn't really matter and what matters is your results. >1 is better than 0, but beyond that having results/publications/presentation matters way more. You might put in 1000 hours with no results and it won't be as impressive as someone who hung around for 400 hours and was able to get a second or third authorship.

One thing you should know about research is that it takes a lot of your time (wet lab, write reports, contamination etc ). Not like shadowing, you can choose your hours 🙂
