OK. Here's the deal. I've been looking around for next summer and there aren't a whole lot of research opportunities I can find. While I am going to apply to the ones that I have a chance at, I'd also like to know if my one year engineering co-op could be viewed in the same sense as research.

I know it's clearly two different things, but I'm thinking maybe when adcoms see it they may have the mind set of "oh, well he did this for a year so thats why he hasnt done any research". At least thats what I am hoping. I definitely need to get some research on my app though b/c I am seriously lacking in volunteer opportunites.

I have posted before and I'm continuously trying to find volunteer opportunites, but no such luck yet. What do you think, and don't tell me don't do things to make your app look good b/c you know we all do it so get over yourselves.

I posted it in pre-allo too, but then I figured it may be more appropriate here.

you haven't been able to find ANY volunteer opportunities? what about big brothers/big sisters? the ER at your local hospital? I find it really hard to believe you can't come up with ANYWHERE to volunteer... do you have some kind of criteria you didn't mention?

Nope. Nothing special. The hospital doesn't seem to know what's going on with volunteers because I've been up there 5 times and either the right person isnt there or they send me to someone else/give me a phone number. I then call them up and leave a voicemail and never get a reply. I'm going to keep trying though.

As far as I know there are no clinics or anythign of that sort around here. I work 40 hours a week, but during all other hours I'm in a strange new town where I really don't know anyone so I don't have alot to do and I could be doing alot of volunteering.

while healthcare-type exposure is needed, you could also do it by shadowing a doctor once every other week for an afternoon, and do some other kind of volunteering, you don't need to restrict it to medical stuff. try talking to your county- children and youth services and whichever branch helps care for the elderly pretty much always have programs in place. I did BB/BS and it was great... there's lots of stuff out there.
