I will probably have to apply in the next cycle (MCAT is not ready) and I will be graduating with a BS degree this year.

I was wondering...How does researching at a foreign country for a year sound? (Assuming my CV is impressive enough for the PI to give me the volunteering position of course) The lab I'm looking at is pretty well known in the academia of microRNA and it is the best university in that country. The foreign country was also my homeland before I got naturalized so it'd be nice if I can spend some quality time there before I fully commit myself to medical school.

So I guess my question is, how does adcoms look at applicants who has spent a year or so time in a foreign country during their gap year? Any disadvantages?

I personally think you should take time to do what you want your gap year. If researching abroad is something that sounds appealing to you then go for it!

I just graduated and I'm spending time working at a yoga school, and then going to India to volunteer followed by teaching English in Spain.

I think gap year a great way to get some great experiences and researching in a foreign country is also something you can talk about in interviews! From what I hear experience abroad is really great for med school.

Good luck!
