I'm in the process of talking with the various reserve components, as well as the NG. As an anesthesia resident, should I seek out one over the others or will my responsibilities be pretty similar in each?

current policy in the army NG is deployments <120days from your home.....don't know the reserve length

I do hear (anecdotally, haven't seen it written down) that the reserve deployments are more likely to be backfills domestically and the NG tends to go overseas....but no actual experience there yet

Agree with Sb's comments above.

Also, most states do not have anesthesia slots. Most anesthesiologists are slotted for field surgeon slots. Folks who want to actually function as anesthesiologists are sent to the Reserves.

Good to know! Thanks for the help. Does one reserve component stand out for anesthesia? I know the Navy does a lot of humanitarian aid work with floating hospitals and all, would this make them a good fit?

Army Reserve policy is to limit your deployments to 90 days abroad. Navy has no such policy so your deployment could be 6, 9, or 12 months.

The Navy has the Comfort and Mercy (unless the Mercy gets sunk in its battle with the Arizona). But they, imho, should play a very, very small role in your choosing a branch of service. There are a lot of good reasons to join the Navy, but the off chance of a tour on one of them would not be a big player among the many factors to consider.

There are a lot of good threads to help you choose a service on SDN, which will apply to the Reserve, to a proportionally lesser degree unless you get deployed. The big pluses for me for the Army for the Reserve Corps are $240k in student loan repayment (instead of $50k) and the deployment policy.
