How is the residence of state determined? I live in CA but go to school in MA. My parents are moving out of the country this year though (I'm a rising Junior in college) so my home address will be changed to my aunt's house in Chicago, Illinois. Does that make my residence in... Illinois? Or California? Or Massachusetts? Or out of country?

Thanks for your help! It's really appreciated.

You are a CA res now most likely. Most public funded schools (both dental and undergrad) do not allow you to change your residence during school (people do this to lower tuition in state schools and the reasons why the state does not allow this is obvious).

Every state has its own procedure to change residence and it usually involves getting a state drivers license, registering your car with the state and officially changing your address with the U.S. Post Office and showing a bill or something similar from that address with your name on it. Some states throw in voter registration.

If you havn't done any of that stuff, you're still a CA resident.

did you spend at least three years at and graduate from a CA high school? you'll qualify for in-state tuition at the UCs regardless of anything else if that's the case (not that you necessarily wouldn't otherwise).

check out (10) under Exemptions from Nonresident Tuition on the last page...actually the whole thing is probably useful to you, at least as a sample of the criteria one school uses.
