residency accreditation

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there's no question that ACGME is using the big profile places as examples to show they're not messing with anybody. It was almost Yale for Gen Surg last year.... The big programs are going to be scrutinized very closely to basically put the fear of god into all the other programs, irrespective of whatever the acgme says.

it probably wasn't ONLY work hours, it's probably greater problems with infrastructure and support...it's gotta be.

in NY, surveys occur by surprise and hospitals get fined. with repeated fines there could be an accreditation issue....

wow.

I came from NYC, where HHC ruled the work hours with an iron fist - and it worked out well. Still, there were weeks that you topped 80 (but that was when you had 2 calls, but averaged out when there was only one call the next week), but that's why they went by the average of the 4 weeks.

This is interesting that the ACGME slapped them so hard; even at our hospital last year, July was a heavy month, but they let it slide a little.

It was interesting also to see Dr. Weinerth in that article; we get emails from him all the time, including more than a fair share of work hours ones.

There's got to be more to the story, somewhere. ( <--- I just realized Ed said the same thing!)

At the same time, I just checked out the ACGME, and they haven't updated the site yet - JHU IM still says, "Continued Full Accreditation", current as of 4AUG2003. Might be smoke and mirrors.

I'd be interested to see what happens to the resident who reported the violations.

this is just a silly ploy to make an example of a big name program.

we all know that all the programs "fake" the # of hours anyway.

Its not as if ACGME "snitches" on the resident or that the resident makes it apparent that he/she was the one doing the reporting (unless they were really stupid). Might not even be a medicine resident...we've had Anesth residents "threaten" to tell ACGME that the surgical residents are violating the rules. So you never know where the info is coming from...

Thats the way it should be too.... Its about damn time all these high and mighty programs get knocked off their pedestal.

They are people, not gods.
