what advantages does a university program have in psychiatry vs community ? Are the necessary for fellowship opportunities / better paying job opportunities , or are they the gate keepers to a career in academics only ? Would ranking a new community program in an amazing location higher than an established univerisity program in a terrible location be unwise ? Thank so

Depends on what you want from training. University programs will probably have more opportunities for research as well as mentorships versus community you’ll mainly focus on clinical ability. University probably have the edge when it comes to fellowships due to the fact that they tend to have fellowships there (in-house) and more fellow trained attendings as well. How much of an edge is the big question since most psychiatry fellowships go unfulfilled.

Location, psychiatry is psychiatry especially when it comes to inpatient severe patients. Outpatients it gets a bit different from city vs rural. So again depends on where you want to practice .
