I'm a first year dental, and I'm trying to plan out my summer. I was debating between doing research at the dental school and tutoring for the DAT. If I chose the DAT tutoring, will affect the strength of my application to residency programs (GPR or AEGD)? I think that research is a great thing, but it is actually necessary to become a competitive applicant? Advice would be great and highly appreciated! Thanks!

Not necessary. It's simply another thing to talk about at the interview stage, but then again, DAT tutoring could be as well.
GPR/AEGDs won't care about research, or likely your DAT tutoring either. I'd recommend that you do what you enjoy / pays more.
