Yet another what are my chances thread

About me:
Top 20 med school
Step I 258
Clinical grades: 1 P (ambulatory med), 2 HP's (peds, EM), 3 H's (IM, surg, ob/gyn)
Jr. AOA
2 poster presentations, no pubs (no anesthesia research)

Interested in academic programs. Not from California but would like to go there for residency. Not planning to do aways. Profs told me my application is strong, but would it be foolish to only apply to 5-6 programs?

As you know, your application appears very strong. The programs that you are applying to, Stanford, UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, etc, are traditionally very competitive. It is certainly possible to have a bad interview somewhere and catch some bad luck with the others. Or you might be ranked high enough to get into all of them. It is probably prudent to throw a wider net if you're not planning any audition months out there. Good luck.
BTW, you do realize that CA is the Greece of the USA and is in severe financial disarray right? I'm not so sure I'd want to be there when it all blows up over the next few years. Really.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm still heading out that way for an audition rotation, but I wonder what will happen to CA in the future. Maybe barry will bail out the state? That would be rough to have your hospital go bankrupt and be caught with your pants around your ankles with a year or two of residency to go. I thought I remember reading about that happening to a program in NY recently. 😕

The odds that an elite Cali residency closes because of the state's financial situation are probably about the same that LeBron signs with the Clippers tomorrow.

Yeah, it could happen. But it won't.

Ugh....California, born and raised there. That place is a mess, I'm glad I don't waste my tax money there anymore. As for the OP, you have a strong app, but I would definitely apply to more schools than just 6. You just never know...

I'm pretty sure your numbers could get you AND ME into anesthesia residency. And I haven't even been to med school yet. 😎

Yeah, I have heard quite a bit about CA's financial troubles, but my SO is starting grad school at UC Berkeley in the fall and we'd really like to be in the same area if at all possible. I think I'll also look at programs in Oregon and maybe Washington state.

i think you are a shoe in but it wouldnt hurt to just apply all up and down the west coast.

Hey, when are you planning to take the Step 2? I have similar stats and I'm planning on Feb next year. A lot of people are taking the Step 2 now it seems...it seems kind of risky with a great step 1 though. What do you think?

I think you have a good shot at a strong CA program. I would apply to other strong West Coast programs like OHSU also. I think that applicants with stats better than yours will still tend to apply to at least 10 programs. Applications are not that expensive and you learn a lot more about the programs by visiting them than you would by searching SDN and Scutwork and visiting the departmental websites.

Not doing aways is fine and if I could do it over I wouldn't have done them either.

I'm scheduled to take it in January. Most people told me that with a good Step 1 score it really doesn't matter when you take Step 2.

Yeah, I think that's a good idea. One of my friends went through the match this past March. He had a score in the upper 250s, delayed the test until late Jan, scored upper 260s, and matched into his top pick. He was not doing anesthesiology.

Oh, one last thing, very few programs require the step 2, but I think UCSF is one of them. That might be relevant to you. I'm not going to take the Step 2 early for one residency program.

Yeah, I'm taking the test in early January, so the score should be available by the time programs submit their rank list.
