Apologies if this is discussed previously, I can't seem to find anything recent via search and everything I find online seems to be school specific.

But for those who have applied to residencies and all that.. what's the general timeline? When does the application system open up, when should you submit? When do interviews normally take place and when should you schedule audition rotations? Just trying to get a general idea in my head.

From what I remember, you can start having letters uploaded as early as May, unless they changed it and made it later. For the apps itself, you can't really start filling them out until June to AOA programs and Sept to ACGME programs. You should generally be doing auditions between May-Dec, with varying benefits to doing them either early or late in the cycle. Interviews mostly take place between Sept-Jan for AOA programs and Oct-Jan for ACGME programs. ROLs are due in Jan for AOA and Feb for NRMP.

All of these details are however program/specialty-specific, and some programs only interview between Oct-Dec. You'll want to look at the Program Director survey for your specialty to get a better idea of the timeline for the specialty you are applying to.

You should have as much of, if not your entire app, completed on the day applications get sent to programs, meaning ~July 15th for AOA and ~Sept 15th for ACGME. Dean's letters/MSCEs usually are released to programs on Oct 1st.

Here is the timeline for this last cycle to give you an idea: https://students-residents.aamc.org/applying-residency/article/eras-timeline-do-residency/

Agree with above except LORs can now be uploaded as soon as you get access to ERAS, which for us was early 3rd year.

Just curious, what are the benefits of auditioning later Oct-Dec after some places have interviewed already? I've heard that thrown around that you can audition through Dec of 4th year and I never really understood how an audition so late could be beneficial. Do some places do a rolling interview type thing where if you audition in dec you get an inteview for jan, or do you just audition places you interviewed at but want to make a longer impression?

I think it depends. My last audition ends last week of Oct and they already sent me an email saying I have an interview scheduled. I feel like if you have your letters already and you're still wanting to rotate, at least for the experience, but I think it can still help with landing an interview/being considered for their program up to November. I feel December is pushing it, but I guess it's still a long while before match lists are due.

Ahhh that makes sense, awesome thank you!

Depending on the specialty, some programs continue interviewing into January, even some AOA programs.
