Does anyone have any opinion on what numbers (step 1 and 2 and GPA) will be competitive next year in Path. I have a Master's in Biomedical Science with an emphasis on Pathology. I did my research in prostate ca., and have been published as a 1st author for my research. Any info. will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Competitive for where? There is a wide range of programs and competitiveness. If you mean a "prestigious" position (ie. MGH, Stanford) then AOA and very high board scores plus a little luck. Doing a rotation at the place you want to go may help. These schools are very competitive. Many of the applicants will be MD/PhD to these places.

But, to match anywhere in pathology then US grad and passing scores will more than likely find you something.

dude, what's your scores/gpa? I'll tell you if you are competitive.

But you know, Path still isn't that competitive. The slots were filled with 60% Americans vs. the typical 50%. That means only about 260 US students went into path.

Consider Radiology where 99%-100% fill with US grads. Or even Gen Surg, a field that has supposedly dropped in prestige, it still filled 99% with probably 90-95%% being US.

im personally really scared for next year's match. As an IMG with a European education, My Step 1 is very mediocre and im currently studying for Step 2.

why did path have to start getting competitive just as i try to get in!!!!!! argh.

the world always messes with my equilibrium.

im still relying on Great Pumpkin to open "Pumpkin General Hospital" by next year's match, and hopefully he will take ALL the SDNers! haha.

ALL i want is Pathology.

*i don't know what the exact purpose of this message is, aside from venting my fears*

cheers

Yes, Pathology has increased in popularity, but let's put this in perspective. Path saw a 59.8% match rate for US seniors, up from 49% last year. The overall match rate was 90.1% Therefore, 1/3 of all spots went to non-US seniors and there were 43 non-filled spots left after the match. If you look at Psych, which has been traditionally considered non-competitive, Psych did better than Path in last year's match with 60.8% for US seniors and 92.9% overall. In fact one could make the case that Path is really more competitive than FP, IM, Neuro, PMR. I really don't think the numbers support the idea that this is a really competitive field yet. And, nobody knows what this year will hold for the match. Many people on here have talked about how many people they know going into Path. From my experience, I don't know of a single person (other than me) considering Path. Anyway, relax, the sky isn't falling yet.

I agree. From my experience, I do not know a single person (other than myself) wants to go into Path. Actually, when I told people in my school that I am interested in Path, they all thought I was weird and gave me a look of a little disgust. I love path and I do not care how other people think about it.

hey thanks for making me feel a bit better. I can't help but feel a little nervous. if i was a US Graduate, id feel pretty confident, but to land a respectable residency is always a bit more challenging for an IMG.

I am doing a 2 month Path elective, which should put my dreams into concrete. Hopefully they will see this and be a *little* impressed at least.

thanks for chillin and cheers

Yeah, I know what you mean. Whenever I tell people that Path is one of the fields I am considering, I get that strange look. I wonder if anyone else gets that look. I guess Path really is not for everyone.

i get the same thing. a weird type of *cringe*. i guess im really glad though that it's not filled with trendies like some other fields like optho, rads, etc....

i think Path is the type of field where its got a definite edginess pertaining to its content. Its such a *definite* base of knowledge and either you love that type of knowledge or you don't. I always think of it as like a *concrete* type of knowledge where you can be an EXPERT at what you do. Not all fields can offer that.

Some people have the kind of mindset that they wanna be an expert at what they do, some people don't have that as their goals.

cheers

Be careful...that's what I thought. Everyone wanted me (for EM) - except the Chair, and he kiboshed any FMG's (except from Sackler). Their loss.

I scrambled into Duke, which is better than I would have ever dreamed, though, so it isn't all bad news.

You're right on the trendiness...hopefully that will play in your favor.

apollyon,

that's fantastic that you scrambled into Duke for EM. belated congratulations.

i see what you mean though about watching ones self when it comes to investing *time* into a program by doing electives. If the chair doesn't want you, then its not gonna happen is it?

Maybe if i buy them enough chocolate and cheese, they will hook a brotha up!

cheers
