Why is Anesthesia not one of the most competitive specialties to get into like dermatology or rad onc? Gas has a nice blend of procedure, OR, and clinics. Outsourcing will not be a problem in the future like radiology. The hours are not that bad, and the pay is pretty decent. From my clerkship experience, it wasn't that stressful except the occasional emergency surgery or hard intubation.

There are tons more spots in Anesthesia than either of those other two (probably more than those two combined). Supply and demand.

Not stressful? Think again. Perhaps another gas rotation would help. You are MD/PHD, so you are set. But for everyone's sake make sure you are prepared for the stress.
