Looking over the contract details for one residency program I am interested in, I saw they very explicitly stated that contracts are given for one year and renewed at the PDs discretion.

This seems kind of scary. Are all residencies like this or is it some sort of red flag?

That's how they all are at my institution, and how they all were at the ~20 programs where I interviewed.

It's in every program's best interest to try and retain their residents. This is for a number of reasons, the biggest one being that it is a huge pain in the ass to try and replace an upper level resident.

Absolutely, each contract is renewed yearly.

Have little fear though, most people have no trouble getting through residency. Even the biggest of slackers.

All residencies are like that.

In fact, any program can theoretically not renew your contract and therefore avoid firing you by just having you work out the year (until June). There is little-to-no right to due process in that circumstance. That said, it's a fairly rare thing to happen unless you were on an extensive probation first or had other issues.
